Olympics Day 10: Volleyball & Badminton

We're on to day 10 of our Olympics. Today was also our the last of our continent bags (although Asia actually spanned yesterday and today).

Since there are no more trading cards to do, and our country boxes are all set to go for next week, we spent our morning working on getting the candy bar election up to date. We had a good assembly line going.

And Calib recorded everything on our big board for us. We're still waiting on one state from Week 1, and then we'll have some results, and an update for all you voters.

But, in the mean time, we are on to Week 2. if your state is up, you were tagged, and told how to vote, if you weren't, don't worry, your state is on tap for another week.

After our candy bar election tally, we watched some Olympics. The boys found synchronized swimming to be really weird, but Calib is convinced he could enter Ellie in equestrian. Watching the Olympics with the boys is fun. We leave them on pretty much all day, and people come and go. And because they have their countries, and trading cards, every once in awhile you'll hear 'Oh cool, I have Jamaica!' or 'Look! That guys from Bahrain!" And that's fun! Plus, they get exposed to all these new things, like Water Polo and Hand Ball, and Discus.

Today's events, however, were volleyball and badminton. We got a whole set, including the net for $6 with Targets summer clearance, and I wasn't sure how well the net would stay up, so I wanted to do all our net sports in the same day. It's a pretty cheap net. But it worked for our purposes, and I got it marked way down. Plus it came with a volleyball, a pump, four badminton rackets and two birdies. Oh, and a bag to keep it all in!

For volleyball though, we used a beach ball. Hayden is not the best with his hand eye coordination, so I try and make things a little easier on him. It was basically the same concept as table tennis. They got ten returnable serves. If it went over the net, they got a point. If they landed the beach ball in the baby pools, they got two points. Peyton was up first.

Hayden went second, and as much as I tried to help him out by using the beach ball, he was just awful at it. Poor kid.

And Calib was up last. Calib's pretty good at all of these events (unless he's really bad at it- which has happened a few times).

Calib and Peyton ended up tying, so we went again for a tie breaker.

Peyton ended up with the gold, Calib got the silver, and Hayden got the bronze.

Our second event of the day was badminton. It was kind of the same concept. Hit the 'birdie', and you get a point. Except the birdie was actually a water balloon. And, you didn't return it, you just smashed it. Except for fencing, and handball, this was one of my favorite events to date.

It was super fun to watch the boys hit the water balloons and get sprayed with water. Calib was up first, and hit eight of the ten balloons.

Hayden also hit 8 of 10.

And so did Peyton.

Worried about not having enough balloons if everyone went again, we decided it was sudden death, and everyone got one balloon at a time. When you missed, you were out.

It came down to Calib and Hayden. Now if you remember, Hayden was still looking for his first gold medal. Well, no more. Hayden was our Badminton Gold Medal Winner!! He was pretty excited.

Afterward, Maddie and I both took turns hitting the leftover balloons. It was super fun. And then, Calib and I played a little badminton with the actual birdie. Until, he backed up and fell right into the baby pool. It was HILARIOUS. I laughed so hard, I cried. And at dinner, I might have listed it as my favorite part of the day.

Hayden didn't know what to pick for his gold medal, it took him forever to decide on a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup. But, he was finally on top of the podium, he had to soak it in.

A gold medal for Hayden!

Peyton and Hayden eat their 'medals' every night, but Calib has been saving them. He's got quite the collection.

We didn't have an Asian lunch, but we did have Asian dinner, complete with some sushi from Publix, and Saki from Epcot.

Asa also made some fried rice, and yakatori. We also had some klik for dessert, and some dried mangos from Indonesia. Plus, our Publix Sushi. Now, you might think sushi from a grocery store would be iffy, but it was all really good.  Every night we go around the table and everyone says their least favorite thing on their plate, and their most favorite thing on their plate. Except for Hayden (who picked the yakatori), the sushi was our favorite.

This evening Maddie was over playing 'the country game' with Hayden and I overheard him say 'You really do need a storyline to play the country game.' Oh Hayden. Meanwhile, Asa had a Singapore Sling while we played Overcooked (super fun indie game, check it out) in the blanket fort.

Our continent bags are all done. I've pulled a few things aside for next Sunday, when I'm hoping to have an around the world spread like we had on my birthday, but most of it has been picked through. We do all have a bag for our country, but they only contain two or three items, so they'll be fun. But not as fun.

Asa's country is New Zealand, and we'll be celebrating it tomorrow (only dinner, we'll be on a field trip for lunch, assuming the weather cooperates), so we had to get his box finished. I helped him out, and now it's all ready to go.

I laid out our plans for the last week of the Olympics. We had to shift some things, so I wanted to make sure we got it all in. I think we've got a plan that works, so I'm really hoping we don't have any washouts this week. Because before you know it, our Olympic flame will have to be extinguished.

I haven't added any medals our countries won today (because I try and avoid spoilers!), but here is the current standings:

Next Up: New Zealand! Canoes! Weightlifting! Boxing!
