Olympics Day 3: Handball & Archery

Welcome to Day 3 of our Olympics! Today we celebrated North America, while holding our Handball and Archery events.

But, here's the deal. This is what the weather has been like, and supposedly is going to be like through at least Tuesday. And, if you don't already know, this Monday-Tuesday- Wednesday (our weekend) is my Birthday Olympic Weekend Extravaganza. I had planned it all out, so that the things we went to do went along with the Olympics, and now the weather is putting a kink in my plans. Not cool, rain. Not cool.

Usually the boys only get to see events right before we do them. But today, I thought I'd let them practice rubber band archery ahead of time. So all morning, there were kids shooting rubber bands at my front door.

When everyone was up and around they opened their North America bag. They had cookies and these awesome orange cranberries from Canada, Pineapple Jamaican soda, salad dressing from the Dominican Republic, Mole, Tostadas, and refried beans from Mexico, and BBQ sauce and Moon Pies from the United States.

Before lunch we worked on our North American Trading Cards. Everyone was trying to trade Asa for Jamaica, since they're projected for five medals.

For lunch we had tostadas for Mexico, berries for the USA, the Canadian lemon cookies, and these Jamaican fried dough things. Everyone was pretty pleased with lunch, but we were mixed on the Jamaican festival fried dough, and the Pineapple pop.

After lunch the boys got to working on today's worksheets for their pizza boxes on their countries.

Just a couple of worksheets today, so nothing too exciting to share with you.

In the afternoon there was a break from the rain, so we got to our handball event. I had an injury and had to withdrawal from the archery competition (it was a brutal pinky finger injury, you don't want to know). Anyway, since handball was a tournament style event, and an uneven number of players wasn't going to cut it, Asa said I could play, since he was doing archery.

So for handball, we played bucketball. I saw an official bucket ball set on amazon, but holy cow... $40 ?! I went to the dollar store, picked up 12 buckets and 2 balls and called it a day. We ended up filling the buckets with water to weigh them down. Then we arranged them in two sets of triangle patterns, and each took turns throwing the ball. Every time you got the ball in one of your buckets, the bucket went away. The first person left without any buckets won. It's basically non beer, beer pong. But, whatever. Today it was handball. Hayden and I faced off in round one, and I ended up being victorious.

Then Calib beat Peyton.

So, that left Hayden and Peyton to face off in the bronze medal match, which ended up going to Hayden.

I knew I was doomed as soon as Calib won. I lost to him in the gold medal match handily. But, you guys, this game was so much fun. My favorite event so far. If you notice in the pictures, we had a crowd watching the event, everyone wanted to play.

The handball medalists.

Then, it was time for Archery. I know the target wasn't perfect. I just threw it up there this morning. The middle was worth 10 points, then 5, then 3, then 1. Everyone had five shots, and were allowed one false start. If they didn't use their false start they got one point added on to their score. Take note of Ellie. She kind of freaked out at this event, kind of like how she freaks out about nerf guns. It was weird.

Hayden was up first, and got a respectable score of 20.

Peyton was up next and edged Hayden out with a score of 23.

Asa tied Peyton with 23.

Calib I've noticed, is either really good at events (see: handball) or really terrible (see: archery). He got a total of one point (being generous) and a red thumb.

Peyton and Asa then had three shots to break the tie.

Asa did well, but I'm not convinced Peyton didn't throw it. He prefers the silver medal candy to the gold.

Our archery medalists.

For dinner we had a quick take on a poutine from Canada. (We currently have two burners on our stove that work, despite repeated requests from the landlord for months to get it fixed, so we have to take that into account when we're planning dinners) We also had a salad with our Dominican Republic salad dressing, and dragon fruit. While dragon fruit is primary grown in south Asia, it's also actually grown in the Americas. And it was on sale at the grocery store. And the Olympics are a great time to get the boys to try new food- they're on board with almost anything if we frame it within the competition!

But our main dish was from right here in the USA: hot dogs! I told Asa we should do like Chicago dogs, Coney dogs, and kind of make a couple of different regions- and he came up with this set up all on his own. I was super impressed. He's not usually this organized. But it was so fun.

He explained what all the different kinds of hot dogs were, and then we made up a bunch of them and halved/fourthed them so we could try each of them. We decided Cleveland is actually good for something, and the Seattle cream cheese thing wasn't as bananas as it sounded.

We were split on the dragon fruit. Calib hated it. The rest of us tolerated it. The salad dressing was pretty much Italian with a little citrus flavor, and the poutine was good, as always.

After today's events our leader board looks like this:

We have a new winner today, with Calib, thanks to Italy's 7 medals.

Up Next: The start of Birthday Olympic Weekend Extravaganza!
