Religion Week: Brazil

Yesterday was our second country that co-insides with Religion Week. We're going to spend two days on most religions, and this was our second country for Christianity. The United States has the largest Christian population in the world, but we're saving the U.S. for later. Brazil has the second largest Christain population, and the largest population of Catholics, so to Brazil we go!

Most of what we highlighted the boys already knew: Five world cups (along with their love of soccer), colorful Favelas (shantytowns), the Amazon, Carnival, and Ipanema Beach.

Some things made more sense though, when they realized the vast amounts of Christians and particularly Catholic. Brazil's capital, Brasilia, is just Brazil in Latin (and Latin ties back to the Catholic church). Also, we used the 'Christ the Redeemer' Statue in Rio as our landmark.

Our second day of Christianity focused on things like major celebrations, people and places to know, and a few other odds and ends. We skipped an activity, because my voice was gone, and I was near death. But, I did save up enough energy and voice to power through the lesson part, so I guess that's good.

When my voice was out, it was time for the boys to make their postcards. Hayden has been sitting at the table much longer than his brothers working on his lately. (Also, they all asked if they could have the crackers from Vatican City day as a snack, I love that they almost always eat the leftovers!)

We stopped by the Brazil Foodmart in Tampa to pick out some things for our Brazilian Dinner.

When Asa was trying to translate the directions on the back, Peyton had to remind him that he should be translating from Portuguese, not Spanish. Opps.

We just kind of picked up some things that looked easy. We ended up with lots of goodies and Picanha, a popular cut of beef in Brazil, but lesser known in the United States. Asa put it in the slow cooker with some suggested spices, and I hear it had the entire house smelling awesome all afternoon.

The final dinner product: Brazil nuts, pigeon peas, Pao de Mel (cookies), Brazilian cheese bread,  Kimiljo Flocao Yoki (sort of like a cous-cous), and the slow cooked Picanha.

The dinner earned five spoons up, but not necessarily enthusiastically.

We had pigeon peas once before, but we got them from a can, and they were better from the can. We also attempted to make the brazilian cheese bread once from scratch, and it didn't work out so well, these were much better.

The meat was really good. It fell apart and had an awesome flavor to it. We all said we'd be happy to have that again, and probably the reason all five of us gave it a spoons up.

We were mixed on the cookies, but Calib really liked them.

I haven't given you a look at our scratch off map in awhile, so here's what we currently look like there.

Hayden colored in Brazil, which again, took a ton of nailpolish. It is the 5th largest country after all.

26 down, 167 to go!

Next Up: My favorite holiday, President's Day!! And then on to India!
