Week 14: Ziplines, Butterbeers & Beaches

Happy April, everyone! Hard to believe, this year is totally flying by! In case you haven't been to the blog for awhile, last week I updated our family pictures on the side of the blog, so check those out. I think they're pretty funny. While doing so, I realized there are hardly any pictures of just me. Like, seriously, that one is from Vegas and it's the only folder that has any pictures of just me.

Asa has been cooking a lot lately. I know I've mentioned it, he's becoming an awesome chef. Last night he made this amazing spinach and pesto pasta with goat cheese and peas. It was amazing. I should have taken a picture of it. So good. But anyway, Peyton is (was?) such a picky eater, we decided a good way to get him to try new foods was to make him Asa's sous chef, and it's been working out amazingly well. He has happily tried and finished almost everything Asa cooked. On Saturday I even made chicken wings, along with a white bean and artichoke dip that we had with pita chips, and he ate it all. Even though he didn't help, so I was pretty pleased with him. Hayden is starting to pick up some of his picky eater habits though, so we'll have to get him involved too, or something. Picky eaters are just the worst at dinner time.

Here's Peyton putting the rub on the porkchops for maple glazed porkchop night on Tuesday. He's touching raw meat! Seriously, this was a huge issue before. He's coming a long way. (And so is Asa, big shout out to the guy who makes pasta with goat cheese! He's come a long way from his mayonnaise sandwich days)

Tuesday we also headed out to Mosi. Our new pass includes IMAX movies, the ropes course AND the zipline. We watched a great documentary on Dinosaurs. Apparently the Gobi Desert in Mongolia (near the capital of Ulanbaatar) is a big fossil finding place. I had to close my eyes a few times as to not get motion sick, but we'll surely go again. A new documentary about Lemurs in Madagascar just opened Friday.

After that we hit the ropes course!

And for the very first time, the zipline! Asa, Calib and Peyton happily zipped back and forth, a couple of times! We can go as much as we like with the pass.

When we got home we had fun mail: our new razor from the dollar shave club! If you've never heard of it, check it out. It's a really affordable way to keep your razors in good shape.

We worked some more on our toy time line. Hayden LOVES the days we do his toy timelines. And he surprisingly retrains SO much information this way. We had Wreck it Ralph stand in for John Hancock.

And Thomas Jefferson writing the Declaration of Independence.

We had Waterstraut Waffle Wednesday this week. Hayden can officially make waffles all on his own.

Also, I often times feel like I live in a frat house (as I'm writing about this Calib and Asa both have their heads in the freezer as some sort of competition. Completely serious. I have headphones on for a reason. Wait, now they're holding up random chairs. I have no idea whats going on here.) Wednesday I came out from the shower and found these two in my room eating cereal out of mixing bowls.

After I had facebook posted about wanting presidential action figures, I was told about this AWESOME website that has finger puppets of historical figures. I want them all! But this week I settled for ones that will be helpful with our upcoming lessons. We got Abe Lincoln (not pictured), Ulysses Simpson Grant, Robert E. Lee, Fredrick Douglass and Harriet Tubman. As a bonus they have magnets on them, so they are currently residing on our fridge.

Thursday we had a cookout. Asa and Peyton grilled us some black and blue burgers, and Peyton decided it'd be a good opportunity to let Deleno wander.

He got to eat his dinner outside with us. Now, if you've seen my garden, you might wonder why I grow dandelions. Thats because this guy loves them! So yes, I have a pot full of them.

Along with the burgers I made some potato fries, and the boys made some awesome dipping sauces. There were three different kinds of mustard, and a sweet and sour.

Our Lego Harry Potter obsession continued this week. At one point, we even moved the ps3 into our room so we could 1. play at night, and 2. keep the kids from seeing spoilers!

Saturday I took Peyton and Hayden out to the library, we stocked up on books and watched Frozen. I've never seen so many people at a movie at the library before! It was twice as many as usual. All the kids were singing the songs too, it was awesome.

We stopped on the way home and got some happy hour Sonic slushies. Can't beat slushies for 60 cents!

Peyton has been a Harry Potter reading machine. In a week's time he has read both Prisoner of Azkaban, AND Goblet of Fire. Except for the library trip, and meals, he spent his entire Saturday reading. By Sunday morning, he had 35 pages left.

I let him finish his book, we had a nice brunch and then we went out the beach. We usually don't go out on the weekends (Asa is even considering working four tens and Saturday in favor of having off Sunday, Wednesday and Thursday every week at the new shift bid coming up) It's just so crowded everywhere, especially this time of year. It took forever to get to the beach, and then when we did the traffic to pay was crazy! So, we went down to the rocky area where there was parking and less people. It wasn't the normal beach experience, with sand castles and such, but we all had fun looking through the rocks for some shells.

After the beach we went over to the sprayground in Dunedin. It's a must stop after the beach. Only a couple of blocks out of the way and you can wash all the salt water off of you, there's a nice playground to play on, and there's always someone there selling snowcones!

Peyton brought along his book to start the Order of the Phoenix. I told you, he's a reading machine the last few weeks. I wish I knew what day he started the series, because he's going to finish it in record time.

Also worth noting this week, our beans (the one thing we planted from seeds) have sprouted. Seeds don't really seem worth it with most plants if you're just growing one or two of them, so I only buy seeds when I can't get the plant. We've had a lot of success with beans in the past, so we'll see how ours go. We'll have to add some poles for them, and likely move them against the house. And maybe even thin them out a bit.

We've got a bunch of tomatoes coming along too. I think we'll end up getting one more tomato plant. Though, it's getting awfully hot for them. I should have planted them a few months ago.

As Peyton (and Calib now, too, as Peyton passed him up) finishes the Harry Potters we've been netflixing the movies. Last night was Prisoner of Azkaban night. Hayden made everyone butterbeers to celebrate.

Today in home school, we hit a milestone! Hayden finally got all of his state flags up. We've been working on these for quite some time. He knows almost all the capitals. There's a couple he still has trouble with, but for the most part he's got them down. The problem is now he wants to start on country flags and capitals. If only they had all started these together instead of three seperate times. Now, Hayden will be on North America, Calib's finished North and South America, and is starting with Europe, and Peyton.. well, he's got all of North and South America, and Europe, and most of Asia (105 countries, capitals and flags in all)

I'm not sure if I previously posted, but we've got our tree all filled out and this week we're writing some bills and turning them into laws!

Also, in a very sad, sad turn of events we watched as Florida's NCAA Basketball Championship hopes crashed and burned. Along with it, our brackets. Based on our point system, since Florida lost, Asa became the winner of the brackets this year. Boo. He didn't even have any of the final 4 right!

So, the winner gets to pick a place to go out to eat this weekend.

Next Up: A pretty low key week. We don't have too much planned for once!
