It's our 13th day of the Olympics here at home, and our 'Best of Africa' day on the country front.
The boys got their Fenderson mail this morning- all pictures of African landmarks, to help them out for Jeopardy later in the day.
Asa and I had errands to run this morning. It's Wednesday, so that means double ad day at Sprouts, where we have gotten most of our produce for this project. It was weird to go and realize it was my last shopping trip for countries.
When we got home, I told the boys before we did African flags for an Olympic event, I'd go through them with them one more time. We've been taking them off the ring and shuffling them up for the event (they have stayed in order of the way we did them up until today), and Peyton complained about all the similar ones. I hadn't realized how bad it was until we took them all off the ring and picked through them. He whined about it, but he knows them all. They are from left to right, top to bottom: Mali, Senegal, Burkina Faso, Benin, Guinea, Ghana, Cameroon, Guinea-Bissau, and Republic of the Congo (I think-- I swear, I did that all from memory, no cheating!)
We played Jeopardy first. There are 54 African countries, but since we haven't done Zimbabwe yet, we only had 53 questions. Calib knew every single one at the first hint, because he's spent the last two days studying the landmarks.
Then, it was time for flags for an Olympic medal. The person to identify the most country flags, capitals, and location correctly, wins! If they tie, the fastest time wins. Calib said he was going to go slow to make sure he got them all correct. He did get them all right, but also in the fastest time. It took him 2 minutes and 48 seconds.
But honestly, Peyton only mixed up the location of two countries, and he knew it as soon as he did it. He was so mad at himself, but I told him knowing all of that and spitting it back out in 3 minutes and 18 seconds is pretty impressive. Hayden was also upset with his time, and getting four incorrect. But he had trouble with the last couple that we've done, because there obviously hasn't been as much repetition on those. Still, for a 12 year old, that's pretty good.
Then, it was time for the event: Bobsledding. We made a track in the kitchen, basically you went around the table, back to the end of the blue line and around again. (The yellow line was the start/finish). They did three laps sitting on their knees on the roller board. A couple of plungers from the dollar store to push them around, and we were all set for the bobsled. They went around three times, fastest time won.
Hayden was up first. (Seriously this one was super funny to watch).
Calib was up next, and he complained about probably being over the weight limit on the roller board. But, he made it three times around in a respectable time.
But Peyton, man, this one was made for him. He smoked everyone. The boys complained this one was easier for him (he's the lightest of the three kids), but Peyton is also good and maneuvering through small spaces.
We held our medal event for Bobsled.
And then the boys went through their African postcards to find their best four.
They were all really impressive. It was super hard to choose tonight for the vote.
Oh, and shout out to Etta who stayed out all day. It's the first time we didn't crate her for the events and everything we had going on, and she did great. We also didn't crate her when Asa and I went out to run errands, and she did well. She is still scared of everything, and I think we were a bit too noisy for her. After bobsledding, she was hiding in the laundry room.
For dinner we voted for our favorites from Africa. The Strawberry Fool dessert, along with the boiled corn (with toasted coconut) from Ghana won, along with the curried potatoes from Uganda, and watermelon for our fruit.
And of course, to nobody's surprise, the Kenya Burger Hut Burger was the winner for our main dish.
While we were eating the boys said we should really have a lot of these things again. I said they're kind of hard to remember, and they told me I needed to make a cookbook based on our favorites. I think I might, because that would be pretty cool to have.
Our after dinner coffee was what we had left from Ethiopia day. Ethiopian coffee is awesome. It's so smooth! I drank mine while working on the blog while we watched the Olympics. And check out Peyton, he was showering while Asa made the coffee for him. Asa handed Peyton the coffee mug and it just so happened to match his shirt!
We tallied up the medals for today. Still no gold for Peyton's Russia team.
And the leaders are still the same. Hayden's been clinging to that top spot.
