Olympics Day 12: Nordic Combined & The Best of South America

Today we crammed all of our Olympics in despite a couple of appointments. Good thing it was South America, which depending on where you list Trinidad and Tobago, only has 12 or 13 countries in total.

Thsi morning the boys got their mail from the Home Office. They're doing pretty good on identifying the pictures, and it's serving as a pretty good review for them. Plus, the Home Office is sending them a little money for their jars for every picture they identify correctly, and a treat to thank them for their work.

When we were going through our favorite meals in the blog, Asa, Calib, and Hayden saw the Columbian Hot Dog and were upset it wasn't on the list, so I said we could have them for lunch. Peyton could just have a plain one. Peyton is however a fan of the potato sticks on top. The hot dogs paired well with the drinks they got yesterday from the Home Office.

Then we played South American Jeopardy, where Calib killed it because he studied all the landmarks for the last couple days. (See him jumping up and down behind Hayden because he knew the answer). They have to wait until their brother's answer incorrectly and then buzz in. There is a bonus of 5 cents per country for the winner to put in their jar.

Then, we did our first of our two Olympic events of the day: South American Flags. First, it comes down to the most you get right, then the tie breaker is just how fast you identified the country's flag, the capital, and location.

This one came down to time, since they all got them all correct. Once again, Hayden was the winner. He beat Calib by .3 seconds! Peyton was none to happy (there was lots of yelling!) But Peyton has always gotten flustered with timed school work. I told him to hang in there, some of the bigger continents (which he knows pretty well), will probably come down to how many people get wrong as opposed to the time (although they could surprise me!).

Hayden takes home his third gold in a row!

Then we did our second Olympic event: The Nordic Combined. In case you don't know that's ski jumping mixed with cross country skiing. Since it's 'cross country' skiing I wanted to add in a country element to it.

I've been collecting water bottle caps for weeks (months maybe!) and today I colored them in with sharpie. Each of us got our own color, and then we drew for the order in which we'd be taking turns for our event. (We just put one of each color in a cup and drew them out to find the order).

So here's how it worked. You had to slide your water cap up the binder for the 'ski jump' part of the nordic combined. The object was to get one of your water caps on each of the six continents on the table. If you landed on a continent, though, your cap only got to stay there if you could identify the country.

However, if someone knocked your skier (water cap) off the continent, you lost your spot. I kept track on a dry erase board so I would be able to erase the 'X' if you lost your spot on a country. We just rotated around the table, walking in a circle to keep our order. It worked out pretty well.

And it was super fun! I saw something like this on Pinterest as a suggestion for 'cross COUNTRY skiing', and it listed a 'map for your table' on the list of items you'd need to hold this event. I already had a map on my table! It seemed perfect. I added in the binder for the ski jump aspect, too, since I already had my idea for cross country skiing.

It was a real nail biter.

But Hayden came in first. Since he was the last one to go every round, we didn't need a tie breaker (which was good, because everyone argued what it should be--- Calib had the best idea and said  we should just give out two of the same medal. Hey, it worked in Bobsled last night!)

Asa then came in second, Peyton came in third, and Calib said he wanted to battle it out for 4th and 5th with me, even though it didn't matter. I ended up hitting Kiribati and coming in fourth. Calib just kept going until he finally landed in Australia. (Check him out in the background at the table all by himself finishing it out while I took Hayden's gold medal picture.

Hayden and Asa were pretty excited about their medal placement (and also enjoyed Hayden's choice of 'national anthem' of Greenlight by Pitbull.

Our medal winners. Hayden is on a golden streak!!! He swept today, won ski jumping yesterday, and Oceania Flags the day before.

After our events, the boys went through all of their South American postcards to pick out their favorites.

They came up with their 'Best of South America' Collections to be voted on at dinner.

And Hayden picked Guyana, Brazil, Venezuela and Argentina.

We did our votes for our South American meals about a week ago.

For dinner we voted in the Ecuadorian Churrasco.  It was a big dinner to plate the first time around, and the second time around as well. It's steak with eggs, chips (fries), a sauce for dipping those fries, rice, two different kinds of salsa, and plantains. It kind of all has to come together, so if you voted for that, there wouldn't really be any side dishes to have in addition.

Of course, for the second time in a row, this meal earned five spoons up. Hayden even ate his rice!

And for desert we had the Argentina Chocotorta  Now, here's the thing, I have a lot of leftovers from recent desserts and such, so I wanted to use all those up. And people said you can use various cookies and such for the chocotorta, so Asa used leftover brownies from Valentines Day for the bottom and then lady fingers for the second layer. He also just mixed our leftover dulce de leche (left over from Dominican Republic Day) with a little cream cheese, and then did the topping with the coconut milk and the chocolate chips from Papua New Guinea day.

So not only was it an AWESOME dessert, but it used up all kinds of my leftovers!

All the medals for the day have been recorded, and now we're just hanging out watching the Olympics.

France is picking it up for Asa. Or, more specially Martin Fourcade has been picking up for Asa. Has anyone else seen this guy? He does cross country/biathlon and has pretty single handily won three events. Sure, one was a relay, but they were behind until he showed up. Also, he finished once in a very exciting photo finish and won. Oh, and someone give that guy who announces these events (that totally sounds like Tony Romo, at least that's what we've been calling him), a raise! He makes it all very exciting when you're watching a race that's over 45 minutes long.

Despite the fact the Netherlands hasn't won a medal in awhile, Hayden's recent gold streak is helping him pull ahead. I'm still lagging behind in our totals, since Sweden isn't winning much of anything- and neither am I. Asa is creeping up on the boys, so we'll have to not take part in a few events to make sure they all win the medals in the end (yes, our Olympics are slightly rigged).

Next Up: Bobsled & The Best of Africa
