Last Sunday, Asa turned 35! I tried to tell him once you turn 35, it's all down hill. Things start aching, and you just feel old. He didn't believe me.... but he's since seen the light.
We did a low-key Birthday Weekend Extravaganza! We started out Friday with a date day where we ran some errands and did some window shopping. We did have lunch at Goody-Goody Burger though, and I got the world's best pancake again. For real, the banana fosters pancake is where it's at people. I told Asa it was the best pancake I ever had. He said 'Name your top three'. I was like 'Easy. Goody Goody Burger is one, the sweet potato pancakes at the Wave is two, and the Macadamia nut pancake at Kona Cafe is three.' He was like 'I can't believe you have a top three.'
We weren't particularly hungry after that, but Asa had a free birthday cupcake from Sprinkles, so we walked around Hyde Park and picked up a cupcake to go.
We also stopped at Kahwa Coffee along our travels.
For dinner that night, we decided to try a new fish fry. Asa said next year we should make score cards and go to various ones to find the best.
This one was at Saint Timothy's, and they had shrimp and seafood paella, which made me happy- but Asa didn't like it as much as Our Lady of the Rosary's all you can eat fish. Plus, it lacked a dessert table.
There was a Native Plant Sale at a different church (holy geez, I've been to a lot of churches lately), and the sign had been up for weeks. Asa said he wanted to go for his birthday weekend, so I suggested we go to the sale, and then on our way back up 41, we stop at all the plant stores and antique stores he always wanted to stop at, but nobody was ever on board. He loved the idea, and called it his 'Birthday Botany Bonanza!" Calib was the only kid to come along, and only because we told him we could drop him off at the animal shelter for his weekly volunteering along the way).
After the native plant sale, we stopped by Duncheons.
They had a lot of plants, but also some really cool pots, and a used pond liner. They had used it for growing water lilies, but they were done with them, so they were selling it at a steep discount. I decided I would think about it, and we could come back if we decided to get it.
After that we stopped at Holloway's Farm Supply. Despite my best efforts, I couldn't convince Asa to let me buy any baby chickens.
We dropped Calib off and then checked out Famous Treasures antique shop, and the Snappy Gator. Both stores would have been a lot cooler had I not just been at grandma's house with a lot of the same old stuff. But, we still enjoyed our window shopping.
We stopped at the Greenary, but it was mostly shrubs and trees, which we don't need any more of.
And then we went to the Imaginaium, another cool little quirky antique store. Apparently we aren't the only one's to go to these little local stores up and down 41, there's a whole map of them at each of the stores advertising one after the next.
It had been a few hours, so we decided to go back to Duncheons, to get the pond. We hadn't found anything better and it was like less than half the price of a new pond liner at Lowes. I also nabbed a very large broken pot for $1 that I decided to put on it's side by the pond, where I could plant some pretty 'spilly' type plants, and the dogs wouldn't trample them.
We picked up Calib and then stopped by one more thrift store, which Calib LOVED. We picked up an Immunity Idol for our next adventure (Survivor: Waterstraut Island). Asa found a bin for the kitchen for all his utensils and for some reason loved that it said 'Vicki's Kitchen', and Calib got a cup with a leather band around it that said 'Richard' on it. I don't get boys, but they were very excited about their finds.
We dug out for the pond, with a little help from Etta and filled it up.
Asa wanted to stay home and relax for his birthday, and what better way to do that than with a giant inflatable pool. Hayden and I got to blowing it up and adding water.
And we had Nancy Reagan Mac and Cheese for lunch.
After lunch we played the family favorite: True American.
And for the first time, Etta got to be out of her crate for it!
Of course, I smoked everyone, because it's a game about presidents.
Then Asa and I went for a bike ride down to Dunkin Donuts for some Munchkinz.
And when we came home we were all sweaty and ready to get into the pool (though it was pretty cold).
Peyton didn't get in, because he is a party pooper, but the four of us had a good time, and Peyton at least came outside to hang out with us.
For dinner we had another cookout (and Calib used his 'Richard' mug).
And later that night we had cheesecake from Costco for dessert.
Mom, Cort, Holly, Gwen and Garrett have been on the Alabama coast for Spring Break with Holly's parents this week, but they did Skype with us for Asa's birthday.
And then we played some games to round out the night. All in all, a nice 35th Birthday for Mr. Asa Waterstraut.
