Part of the reason we usually visit Fremont at the end of August is so we are there for the county fair. Hayden especially likes to enter things, and then enjoys getting a big check from all the winnings. On Tuesday morning he was up early to make a couple of flower arrangements to enter. He doesn't love doing flowers, but you get $1 just for entering, and the competition isn't too stiff, so you usually get some premium too.
After he worked on those, we headed over to the fair to put in his entries, and check out how all his other stuff did. In the craft building, he was basically the only entry in all the categories in his age group. Nearly everything in the cases was his.
You can enter up to three items per category, and in some categories, Hayden entered all three and then swept the whole thing, getting first, second, and third.
Over in needlework he did really well too. A first place on his apron, a first on his owl, and fair pillow, and a second place on his whale and jean basket.
A skirt he sewed and a hair bow also won ribbons.
And he even got not one, not two... but THREE Best of shows. His ribbon wreath won best of show in the arts and crafts building, his cactus picture won best of show in photography, and his drawstring fish bag won best of show in needlework.
After checking out all the ribbons, it was time to help out in the Flower building. My mom has been in charge in some capacity here for years, and she always likes when we come for the fair so we can help record the judging and put on the ribbons. The kids don't love this job, but they do it for grandma.
No surprise Hayden was the only entry in all the categories with his flowers, so even with the droopy mums, he won first place in all of them.
We had hoped to visit the "Beef, It's Whats for Dinner" tent that's always at the fair. They have the best chopped steak sandwiches, delicious hand cut fries, and awesome lemon shake ups. But, this year the tent was missing (It's always there- I have no idea what happened!!) So, after all their help at the fair, I took Peyton and Hayden to Taco Bell. I was most excited the one in Fremont still has the Pizza Hut/Taco Bell combo, so I got some breadsticks.
That evening, Asa and I helped my mom around the house with some things. Apparently she had this huge vine growing up the side of her house, and the people came out and killed it, but never took it all down. So, we got up on the roof and took care of it.
We were rewarded for our efforts with a giant pizza from A&J's. Oddly enough, there's five in Ohio and one in Oklahoma. It is good pizza though.
So we all chowed down on that out on the deck.
Later that evening, Asa, Peyton and Hayden walked down to the corner store right by my moms house. Peyton says nothing feels more like childhood than slamming a bunch of candy up on the counter at Koeb's Corner. I waited outside on the porch (that's lovely now that it's been re-done).
And then they came back with all their finds.
That evening, I helped my mom put in the points to see the overall winners of the first flower show at the fair.
Next up: HAMILTON!!
