And the Half-Blood Prince

Welcome to Half-Blood Prince Day. Can you believe there's just ONE day left? I'm pretty proud of myself, because I think I did the books justice, and pulled off one of our best theme weeks ever. I wish I could follow it up with a surprise trip to Universal to FINALLY go to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, but that's so expensive, it'll have to wait.

My favorite part of today was Care of Magical Creatures class- we made some fairy houses!

But, I'll get to that. Last night I wanted to put something in their mail that was fun, so I decided they would all be getting memos from the Ministry. Asa is by far the more entertaining parent than I am, so he wrote the boys some notes, and I folded them.

A couple of house points and Ministry Memos, along with the morning owls.

Classes for today: Astronomy, Potions, Care of Magical Creatures, and Defense Against the Dark Arts.

Our quote of the day from the Half-Blood Prince: "People find it far easier to forgive others for being wrong than for being right"

I had other plans for Defense Against the Dark Arts, but the boys WANTED to do the same version as yesterday (they WANTED to do MATH!) So, outside we went on Asa's lunch.

And it was Calib from Ravenclaw for the win!

They worked some more on their lapbooks for Astronomy today. Post of it was filling out a tourism poster for the planet of their choice. Hayden had picked Neptune.

Calib picked Jupiter for his lapbook project.

And Peyton has been researching Saturn.

Since Hayden's has been a little less involved, I gave him this to color and help remember what order from the sun the planets are in.

Then we got to making our fairy houses. Peyton used a bucket, some shells, and some plaster.

Hayden used a bowl, a clay door, and some leaves and sticks.

Calib is making his out of clay, so it'll still need some more work.

Then it was on to potions, where we had to mix our potion for tomorrow. It's a two day project.

Then it was on to our activities for the day. I do NOT recommend this one if you're even the teeny tiny-est short on patience. Especially not with three kids.

But we made it through our origimi golden snitch, and they all actually came out pretty cool.

We also made some Spectrespecs! We loved Specterspecs when we played through Lego Harry Potter!

Luna Lovegood would be proud of her fellow Ravenclaws' effort.

But Hayden's were pretty cool too.

And Peyton's are super creative too. (Thanks to grandma for the puppet making kit- it came in handy for the decorations, and we still have plenty left for other projects)

After realizing the dinner I had planned for tonight takes a lot more prep than we had time for, we decided to have tomorrows dinner tonight and flip flop them. Deathly Hallows dinner was beef stew with herbed dumplings. Asa did a great job, as always.

Asa took Calib out to Publix after dinner to spend his Publix giftcard he had gotten for Christmas (because doesn't every 14 year old want a grocery store gift card as a present?) He came back with a very 14 year old like hull. But, he's happy. Meanwhile I took Hayden out to ride his scooter, and Peyton played some video games.

Pop quiz time! They all did really well, we threw in some Science questions on the planets, too.

Peyton won the house cup by 3 points. Calib was not pleased.

We did do our other plan for Defense Against the Dark Arts tonight, too. The kids each got a choice if they wanted to do it or not- but they sat on the middle of the floor in their dark room with a blindfold on (maybe a little unnecessary to do both, but whatever) and Asa tried to startle them. If they remained calm, they got some house points for passing their Defense Against the Dark Arts exam. They just thought this was the best. (But if you're ever copying my Harry Potter Week, this one might not be for everyone)

Sneak Peek, tomorrows board is up, we're going to have an extra class tomorrow just because we have all kinds of little projects to finish up. But, I am most excited about tomorrows activities!

Next Up: And the Deathly Hallows (I'm kind of sad to see it end, aren't you?!)
