So Long, Ancient Greece!

I've really been phoning it in these last few days. I think I'm getting that home school burn out that creeps up every once in awhile. But, we're also nearing a six week "break" that we plan on taking all the way through May, so it's like I'm just itching to get to that. It didn't help matters Asa and I, for whatever reason, just could not sleep Thursday night, so Friday we were both pretty exhausted. But, I did sort of power through. We eventually got to everything I had planned, so I'll give myself a half-hearted pat on the back and continue on.

We had more of Ancient Greece to study!

We did keep up with our vase project. We did a second layer of paper mache, and added handles.

We let that dry overnight and then painted them....

..... with something like three coats of paint.

Then we popped the balloon that was giving us the middle shape.

I was slightly worried they would collapse, but they held up really well.

And then the boys painted designs on them.

They all turned out pretty cool. I mean they're made from newspaper, cardboard, and flour.

We also made some columns when we were talking about Greek architecture. I didn't even take pictures while we were doing these, told you.. phoning it in. But, they're made out of hot glue, toilet paper rolls, and index cards. Oh, and white out.

And we found a pretty good use for our columns too.

Oh, and we constructed the Parthenon out of sugar cubes and graham crackers.

Of course you can't celebrate the Greeks without talking about the Olympics. We held a mini Olympics with discus (aka see who can throw the cake pan the farthest).

The javelin, with an Asa Waterstraut constructed javelin.

And chariot races. The boys were the horses, and had to pull the 'chariot' (aka baby pool full of rocks) behind them and run around the two chairs.

We added more rocks for Peyton..

And even more rocks for Calib...

We should have put more in though, Calib smoked his brothers.

I had plans to make those Greek headband thingies instead of medals, but I told you, phoning it in. So, instead I made these medals. They're just candy taped to yarn. So easy. Bronze of course was an orange Reese's.

Hayden might not have been too pleased to take bronze in every event, but he was pretty happy with his three Reese's (Peyton and Calib meanwhile complained they would have thrown the competitions if they knew bronze was peanut butter cups).

Peyton won two silvers (York Peppermint Patties), and one gold (Twix)

Calib won two gold and a silver.

It is getting warm enough that while we were outside, all the chocolate melted though, so they had to be put in the fridge to get their shape back, opps.

We played a game of 'Name that Greek' before I had to take the board down. Tomorrow is Thomas Jefferson's birthday, so I'll need it for that.

Hayden wanted all the gods and heroes to go to his room though. With all the presidents stuff they are quickly running out of space, so Asa suggested we put the gods on the ceiling around their glow in the dark stars. Hayden LOVED the idea. Hey, whatever floats their boats.

We also got to play knucklebones. You put the five bones on the top of your hand, throw them up and try and catch as many as you can. Peyton was pretty good at it, he's the only one that's been able to catch all five.

We tried with our yoyo, but it didn't really work out too well.

Oh, and the last few dinners have been some weird greek pancake things...

...Some awesome chicken skewers....

And a shrimp and feta bake that was awesome.

And we couldn't have greek week without throwing a toga party.

Since we have the greeks to thank as the birthplace of democracy, I decided we should vote on our next theme week.

It won't be for while, until after our break, but the winner in a landslide was Villains Week!

That's it, I've gotta get at least something for TJ up on the board, and we've got 10 minutes of cleaning, Survivor, and a game of Spy Alley on the agenda for tonight.

Up Next: Happy Birthday, Thomas Jefferson!
