Week 22: The Big One Four

Welcome back, Calib! Last Wednesday he flew home (all by himself-- for the very first time!) Unfortunately, even at 14 there's only one way he can take by himself without being considered and unaccompanied minor (and thus adding ridiculous fees), but at 15 we'll have more options. It's awfully expensive when you get pigeonholed into one airline, and only being able to use the Cleveland airport.

Hayden and I went to pick him up from the airport, and waited (somewhat) patiently for Calib's plane.

He was quite happy to be home- a total chatter box the whole day. He was happy with only spending two weeks up there, got to go to Woody's and the movies a couple of times, was there for some family birthdays, but missed out on Cedar Point. Maybe next time we're up.

He was also happy that I had fully stocked the freezer with hot pockets (his and Asa's favorite nightly snack). I only ever buy them when they are on sale, but then I stock up. And to get them to fit in the fridge, we take them all out of boxes and put them on the shelves in the door. At first, I categorized them so they would know what they were getting, but they found it far more entertaining to mix them up. It's a game to see who gets what. Crazy boys.

We've had quite the rainy afternoons lately. I think we had a late afternoon thunderstorm all but one day last week. However, Peyton and Hayden we're happy to watch all the snails and slugs that come out afterwards.

Asa worked overnights last week, got a total of 16 hours of overtime, and was totally out of it for most of the week. But, by Saturday his schedule was back to normal- allowing him to enjoy a couple days off. A new yogurtland store was opening down by Citrus Park, and giving away from frozen yogurt and toppings. Of course we couldn't miss that!

I woke Calib up at 10:15 to see if he wanted to sleep, or come along. He chose sleep, but yelled at me later for not waking him up. (silly teenagers!) But Hayden and Peyton were happy campers. They totally loaded up on the toppings!

We came home for lunch (frozen California Pizza Kitchen pizzas that I got for 49 CENTS a piece!) before heading out to the library for Hayden's Summer Reading Kickoff Event. They had a "Mad Scientist" give an hour long presentation for the kids. It was fantastic! Hayden's favorite part was the diet coke and mentos explosion.

There were lots of 'close your ears' experiments too. But, Hayden had a total blast, and while I didn't get a picture, he even held a tube light while the Scientist used a Tessela Coil to light it up!

Saturday Calib was spying his presents, and he was fully aware what this package was. He thought he was all sly about pretending he didn't know, but he was asking if he could "open it before bedtime". He had asked for new bedding for his birthday, so he was pretty confident the big puffy present was just that.

Oh, and the wrapping paper was courtesy of Hayden.

This is Calib loving his new bedding. I got the whole thing at Kohls for $50.65. It was on an early bird, plus I had a 15% off coupon. But, what was perfect is since I was just over 50 (a little under with tax, but they gave it to me anyway), I ended up with Kohls cash. It was perfect!

Oh, and that's Peyton on the floor being jealous of Calib's new bedding. It really is super comfy.

Sunday was of course Calib's fourteenth birthday. In our house you get to pick one reasonably priced meal out, and one meal for someone to cook. I was thrilled when Calib picked PDQ. The way we do it, we can feed us all there for right around $30, which is a great deal for a family of five.

After PDQ, we went out to Pin Chasers to go Bowling. We had a Groupon to bowl for two hours!

Peyton was sporting his monkey hat (he didn't seem to care it was at least 85 degrees outside) He later decided it was good luck, so we all took turns wearing it.

I love this picture. It's Calib giving him pointers on bowling that he apparently picked up from Jason while he was in Ohio. It actually worked for me. I followed Calib's instructions for my one lonely pin, and totally ended up with a spare.

I'm pretty sure nobody ever gets over 100 in Bowling.

To be fair though, Asa doesn't try to knock down pins, he just tries to throw his bowling ball over 20 mph. In fact, there were a few times he threw a spare, and had no idea why we were all cheering for him. He wasn't watching the pins, he was watching the screen for his speed.

He eventually did hit 20, too.

See, Bowling over 100 is impossible. Even with bumpers.

We came home for presents. Which, was really just the one since he opened the other the night before.

But, it was a good one. He's been asking for a Nexus, so we made it happen. He's one happy 14 year old.

While he waited for his nexus to update and charge, he played some Mario Kart with his brothers, and Asa and I got dinner ready.

Calib specifically asked for Homewreckers in a bowl. It's basically all the stuff inside a Homewrecker from Moe's, but in a bowl instead of a burrito. They are his favorite.

Peyton put Washington in his hat, and thought it was hilarious. He was all "Mom, look! It's the rat in the hat."

After dinner, Peyton, Asa, and Calib went out to airheads, the trampoline gym in Tampa. Hayden doesn't jump enough to make it worth the money, and I seem to get a bit motion sick after awhile, so we stayed behind.

That picture up there is the before. The picture below is the after. A couple of hours later, they showed back up at home all sweaty and tired.

After showers it was time for birthday cake. Not caring he was getting a pink birthday cake, Calib specifically asked for strawberry cake with strawberry frosting (and funfetti frosting between the two layers)

Grandma and GiGi joined us via skype for the event, so they could sing Happy Birthday too!

You know it was a birthday success when you get the "thanks so much for my birthday" from your kids. Thank you for being such a great kid, Calib. I know as far as parenting a teenager, he took it pretty easy on me my first year. Here's hoping it keeps up.

This week I picked up a couple of  great deals, but Raspberries are practically being given away (I got them for 41 cents a package a couple of times this week!) Peyton and I are the only big raspberry fans, but I also had some strawberries and blueberries left to mix them with. So it's been berry mania this week.

We've also been getting in LOTS of pool time. In fact, one day the boys even went twice. They're making the most of it before the public schools get out on summer vacation later this week.

We also worked on our summer bucket lists. We each had five buckets to write down something we wanted to do this summer. Then we colored them, cut them out, and lamenated them.

I couldn't figure out where to put all the buckets though, I couldn't use the chalk board because I need that for the summer theme weeks. So, we decided the front door would make a nice home for them.

Thats it from here. Hayden and I were going to hit the children's museum today (it's free target Tuesday) and get our free Burger King ice cream cone, but Hayden has an upset stomach. I felt bad when I told him we couldn't go, because he was pretty excited for a Hayden & Mom afternoon, and he cried. But, he's got to get better so we can do Disney tomorrow. We have fastpasses to the brand new Snow White Ride!! It just opened a week ago, and I booked these fast passes WEEKS ago.

Next Up: Disney, Date Night, and Summer Reading!
