Social Distancing Journal, Day Five

Newest numbers: 8,525 cases in the US, that's up nearly 3,000 from yesterday's blog. Not quite flattening the curve, but hopefully the sharp spike is just because we're finally getting testing under control. So much for a change in Trump's tone. I turned the news conference off today after he came out and immediatly called it the "Chinese Virus". Apparently by that point he'd also already tweeted about the "fake news", and how poor Bernie was getting screwed again, which is so transparently obvious he wanted to run against Bernie not Joe. But, whatever. He did tel HUD to stop evicitions, not for nearly long enough, but it's something, and he's sending out hospital ships to New York, and doctors can practice across state lines. So, that's all something, I guess.

Here in Florida, I think things are business as usual. I'm still getting plenty of Facebook ads to "come on in!" and as far as I can tell, the only places that have switched to drive thru only are the national chains that are doing it everywhere. Of course, it's hard to tell how many people are out and about because I'm obviously NOT out and about. But, the beaches are just as busy. Lots of local news went out there today. There was a LONG line of traffic heading into Clearwater today. And like, this is a Florida problem, but it's also a problem for all of you. Clearwater beach is notoriously touristy. Like, most locals only go there when their visitors ask them to. In fact, one local reporter went out to talk to people about they they're out there- and almost every single one said "I won't less this ruin my Spring Break" and no less than three groups were from Ohio. So, that means they're coming back to your state, possibly carrying the virus. The Tampa mayor finally took things into her own hands on this side of the bay, and is closing Tampa's beaches (but that's not really all that many- Tampa's beaches are on the bay not the gulf). The Clearwater City Council voted tonight to close Clearwater beach but NOT UNTIL MONDAY!

Oh, and the first member of Congress tested positive. A Republican from Florida. Color me shocked.

You know how Florida's numbers didn't really go up for like two days? Well, today it jumped about 100 out of nowhere, last I heard (at lunch time) we were at 314 cases. Included in that count, is a couple of University of Florida students. So now, they're telling kids to "leave campus if possible". Wait, what? I thought everyone had gone home. But no, they have online cleasses but they didn't send everyone home! USF also had their first case here in Tampa, someone who works in the student counseling office.

Yesterday's press coference was kind of a mess about K-12 schools, today, in print, it was a little more clear. There's no classes in person until at least April 15, and there will be no grades and no testing for the rest of the year, but there is still school work. Man, I'm glad we home school.

They're also finally canceling in person church services here, and opening some drive thru testing centers, but you have to meet very specific criteria to get a test. It is moving in a good direction, I think. But again, I'm so annoyed everyone isn't just staying home!

We crossed a couple things off Bingo today. With Florida pushing school closures out we could cross off "some schools extend closure past current two weeks, and when Canada and US closed their border today, my cousin announced she thought it counted as "Someone closes their border to US Citizens.  The Dow also dropped below 20,000 today.

It is funny when something happens and we all shout "bingo!" and run to the board to cross it off. Sure, it might be seen as a little insensitive, but it makes it a little less scary when the dow drops below 20,000 and at least you can shout bingo and cross it off!

Usually on Wednesdays, the little dogs stay home for the morning walk. They're getting on in years, and it can be tough on Phenom to do long walks that many days in a row. I try and take Ellie on the whole loop on Wednesdays and today I let her sniff as much as she wanted. I find I have a lot more time on my hands with errands to run (and Hayden to take around).

In garden news today all six lettuce sprouts on our next round of greens have already sprouted.

And my sunflowers are sprouting too! They'll brighten my day, but they'll also attract bees!

I'm going to have to thin my radishes eventually too. They're all coming up! Apparently though, when you think them, you can throw them on your salad!

Also my first toad is back! In the summer I have tons of them enjoying my pond, which I love. They've been gone for the winter, but they're returning!

My mom is at Cort and Holly's, but that doesn't mean she can't help Calib with math. They've had a couple zoom meetings this week. Now, Calib is acutally being proactive, because while they switch his math class to online he gets an extra week of spring break, so he technically doesn't have to do it all. But, he is. Zoom math help from grandma isn't coronavirus news though, they've been doing this all semester, it's just without any lectures except online, he's going to need even more help.

Hayden and I meanwhile worked on making our candies come to life for the candy bar election.

I can't exactly rush right out to get crafting supplies for projects, so we had to work with what we had. I think we did a pretty good job!

Poor Etta is really struggling. She hates all the people outside in the neighborhood, walking by with their threatening dogs and children screaming. She's just a mess. Part of the reason we've seen Frozen II every single Social Distancing day is because we've discovered if you put something on TV she doesn't hear every little noise and bark or cower. So on todays Disney Plus we "watched" or at least it was on: Frozen II, Zootopia, Tangled, Moana and Brave. Disney Plus is great for background!

Today is also our Florida Anniversary. We've lived here FOURTEEN years! Usually we'd take this opportunity to do something you can't do in Ohio in March...like go to the beach or a water park or Disney. But, instead I made a charcuterie and we ate outside on the screened in porch. Not exactly what we had in mind two weeks ago, but that's ok.

Asa, Calib and Hayden are still really sad about Wrestlemania. So, my nephew Garrett took his wrestling action figures and taped a WrestleMania himself. He even made a sign and played music. In case you're wondering, Roman Reigns was his winner, as Calib predicted.

The guys are currently outside playing basketball. They've since switched to playing VIRUS (instead of Horse) and we have plans to watch Survivor tonight, at least we still have that.

But, without our usual weekly benchmarks it's real weird around here.
Calib: "Is it Tuesday?"
Hayden: "No, it's Thursday."
Me: "Wait. I think it might be Wednesday."

Flying Squirrel, the trampoline gym the boys were hired to work at, sent out a message today to let everyone know it's going to be awhile before they open and if you have a job now not to put in your two weeks yet. So, that's still going to be a minute.

Most popular "hurricane snacks": Mini Donuts, but the powdered sugar ones. Apparently the chocolate ones are gross.

Toilet paper supply: Still Plenty, no worries here.

Current binge wathing obession: Asa and I watched the first episode of Little Fires Everywhere last night. Not bad.

Most popular game: Civ 4 today

Boredness scale 1 to 10: 2. But, it's been pretty business as usual here. Once we get to the later part of the week and Asa only works a half day, we usually would go out and about then- so it's going to get weird.

Frozen II Watchthroughs: 5

Days Down: 5

Days Remianing: Undetermined.
