2020(1) Summer Games Day 8: Judo & Golf

Welcome to Day 8 of the Olympics! Time for some Judo and Golf (spoiler alert: weather did permit), and our featured country of Portugal (which everyone easily got correct).

Day 8 of our Olympics day fell on a Wednesday which meant Asa was done with his office hours early and Calib had the day off. Since he usually has Friday and Wednesday off I figured I could plan some fun Olympic outings on those days. Last summer games we went on lots of field trips!

I knew we wouldn't be able to do all that. First of all, that all sounds expensive (kid prices must have been cheaper), and also it's hard to get people on the same schedule with leaving the house.

Still, I had hoped to maybe hit up some canoe spots, go to the beach for a beach games day, or maybe even go to the Tradewinds for some climbing on the water obstacle course.

But, if you don't live here, you might not have heard about how terrible the red tide has been here as of late. It's fricken everywhere. So all those coast/beach activities were probably not going to work out.

And then there's this...

Things are getting bad here in Florida (we've seen broken our daily record for cases reported, and reached an all time high hospitalizations). Now, of course, we're all vaccinated. But there are varying studies on how well the J&J vaccine is performing against the Delta variant. So, in order to be super safe, we're back to wearing masks (though I can't say the same for most Floridians), and avoiding too much indoor activity.

But we won't let a little (or really, a lot) of red tide, and Covid get us down. (Oh and the heat, it's SO fricken hot lately).

So onward we went to our only martial art event: Judo.

I set up a ring in the family room..

And then each person had a piece of paper taped to their back. First person to get the paper off their opponents back was the winner.

Calib had won an advantage, which was getting to pick your opponent. He went with Hayden, which left Asa to face off against Peyton. Asa won in record time, and he was left to await his opponent for the gold medal match.

Calib easily beat Hayden..

Leaving Peyton and Hayden to face off for the bronze.

And Calib and Asa for the gold..

Your medalists. There was a bit of a controversy over Peyton and Hayden's match (so we just gave them both the Bronze).

And then everyone (minus Peyton, siting the heat) went off to play some Mini Golf.

There is a course at a different subdivision down by the library, and it's fairly inexpensive (it was like $22 for the four of us), and as a bonus we were the only one's there on a Wednesday afternoon!

We had the course all to ourselves.

Hayden picked to use his advantage in this event, but even a six stroke advantage couldn't help him.

I wasn't doing to hot either.

But Calib really started to fall apart at the end. That's his ball in the water there, where he's trying to decide what to do.

The silver medal came down to the last hole, between me and Calib. Ultimately, we tied.

And Asa ran away with the gold.

Your golf medalists for 2020!

Portugal was our featured country, so we had some pears from Spain and some Sangria

With some paella

And for dessert, some Sopapilla Cheesecake Bars.

Seriously, this dessert is delicious.

Betting today wasn't on Judo or Golf, but instead was on Table Tennis, Women's Singles. China won both the gold and silver, and Japan won the bronze, so everyone was paid out except Hayden.

In the evenings, we've been watching the Olympics all together in the livingroom when the Primetime stuff first comes on. But then I go to shower and the boys watch something else in the Family room, and I just shout for them when races are on (usually swimming), of course then they all just screw around, but what can you do?)

A check in on the medal totals..
