2022 Winter Olympics, Day 15: Nordic Combined

We're down to three days of Olympic events (well, two after this blog). I'm a little sad, but it's also a lot of work. It reminds me of Christmas. It's super fun, but you're like 'it's time for this to be over'.

For day 15, our event was Nordic Combined (a combo of Cross Country skiing and ski jump!), and our country was Trinidad and Tobago

Peyton didn't even a venture a guess on the spotlight country for today. Hayden missed. And Calib actually got it correct. He said it was their Bobsled team that helped him out. It's Trinidad and Tobago's first Winter Games appearance in 20 years!

The bet for today was on Mens 1000 meter Speed Skating. Netherlands, not shockingly, came in with the gold, so Calib got a payout for that. But Canada came in with the silver, so Hayden also got paid out. Peyton, sadly, is just not great at this betting thing.

For dinner, we had Trinidad and Tobago box dinners, with bbq chicken, garlic bread, fries, corn pudding, salad, and pineapple! This one is fairy simple, and is a bit carb heavy. But, a fun dinner for a Friday night. (And why are frozen fries SO HARD to find? It took me like two stores to get these, and even then it was slim pickins!)

I lined everything up and then asked everyone what they wanted in their box dinner.

We also had a beer- well not so much a beer as a cocktail- from Trinidad for this one. When we picked this up at Total Wine, the cashier said it was super popular, and we liked it too!

I had lots of ideas about how to run the Nordic Combined. At first I thought maybe we'd just do cross country skiing, and ski jump again. But, I'm not sure Peyton would have been cool with two events.

So, then I started to think... if there was some way to get the old table top from the country project (yes, it was still in the garage), out in the backyard I could make it two events in one. And, Asa usually indulges my strange ideas, so he didn't even question it when I was like 'what if we dug out the table and put it on top of the fire pit?'.

I built a smaller track in the backyard than our previous cross-country skiing events, a simple oval track (out of pool noodles and orange cones)...

...and then the table with a ski jump (if you missed our ski jump competition, we had little water bottle lids you slide off the binder and onto the map)...

The way this worked is they began at the finish line, and "skied" along to the ski jump, where they had to land a "jumper" (water bottle lid) on each of the six continents.

They earned "jumpers" by identifying flags from each continent. Whether you landed a jumper on the continent in three jumpers or not, you had to take another lap around. If you landed one, on your next time around you moved on to the next continent. If you missed, you had to continue with the same continent.

It was a timed event. But, there was a five minute limit, and after five minutes, we noted your progress.

Hayden was up first and made it as far as Oceania (the third continent) in the 5 minute time limit.

Calib went second and made it to Africa in the 5 minute time limit.

Peyton smoked everyone. He knew all his flags, and named them quickly. Though he missed Europe and had to circle the track a few times, but he sped through the rest so fast, we stopped him after he got South America. He was only at just over 4 minutes, but had made it further than anyone else.

So there you have it, your gold medal winner.

Your 2022 Nordic Combined Medalists.

Sadly, this was the last event with our skis. All we have left is Curling and Bobsled. And I still haven't decided which order to do those in! But, I do have my curling "Stones" freezing in the deep freezer.

And if you're wondering why it was dark when we did the event, it's because Calib's new computer chair arrived and it took awhile longer than we anticipated to put it together.

As always, I leave you with the leader board.
