2022 Winter Olympics, Day 6: Freestyle Skiing

Welcome to Day 6 of the Winter Games. Today, our even was Freestyle Skiing (think moguls/aerials), and our country was the Netherlands

Both Calib and Peyton got the Netherlands correct, and picked to add their medals to their total for the most country medals. I'm scratching my head at Hayden. He had no problem getting Lebanon and Ghana, but has missed on Germany and the Netherlands. I really thought the postcard picture gave it away, but I guess not so much (Calib said his tip off was the religious affiliation), and Peyton said the Speed Skater helped him (because everyone knows the Netherlands are dominate at speed skating).

Up for betting on today was Women's Snowboard Cross. Hayden gets the only pay out today, as Canada came in with the bronze. USA took home their first gold of their games in this event, and France came in with the silver.

For Freestyle skiing, I put together a course in the backyard, it was a relay race of half "aerials" and half "moguls".

At the start, they wore their skis, and had to make two "jumps" over the PVC pipe hurdles. Now, when I say jumps, you basically had to position yourself sideways and step over them. There was no other way to make it over without knocking them down, which would earn you a ten second penalty.

Halfway through they arrived at a mat, where they had to transfer out of their skis and into a potato sack (you know, because moguls looks like you're hopping).

After that, they had to run the back-end of the track and make the jumps over the various obstacles back there. Again, any obstacle knocked over added 10 seconds to their time.

Time stopped when they crossed the finish line, and then penalties were added.

Peyton ran the course first. He's trying to correct his sleep cycle, and so he's pulling an 'All-Dayer' (get it, like how we pulled an all-nighter the other night? I've told this joke no less than three times today, and nobody was amused.)

Anyway, Peyton struggled on aerials, and knocked over both pcv pipe hurdles. The first after trying to get it over it, and the second just because he said it wasn't worth the ten seconds. But he flew through the moguls section faster than anyone.

Hayden was up next. He's sporting his Olympic shirt, which gets you an extra piece of candy at the medal ceremony! (Peyton and Calib claimed they did not know this, but I did mention it at the beginning when I handed out their shirts.

He made his way quickly through the pvc pipe, but did knock over the second one. And he did take a spill on the moguls section, but he got up so quickly, it didn't really have an impact on his time.

Calib was up last. This is him being a dork and tying his shorts extra tight.

He knocked over the second hurdle as well, that one was a little higher, and everyone seemed to have trouble with it.

But he did pretty well on the moguls side (and I got a killer action shot- look at that height!)

But he came up short. Hayden won gold by just one second.

Your 2022 Freestyle Skiing Medalists

For Netherlands Dinner, we had Dutch Stamppott from the Five Spoons Up Cookbook.  This one is crazy. You know how Americans think they're all cute hiding like cauliflower in with mashed potatoes? Well, the Dutch take it to a whole other level. They're like, "lets shove ALL the vegetables in mashed potatoes", and it totally works. We also had Dutch Apple Salad. Not a bad meal, but it is a decent amount of chopping and dicing!

We also paired it with a beer to split. We've been doing this project so long, we know have a kid old enough to try around the world drinks with us. However, I actually got this one for a later country... Haiti. Asa saw "product of Holland" and grabbed it out of the fridge. Not sure how those two coincide. But here we are.

A look at the leaderboard. Hayden has pulled ahead money-wise. He got himself $2 today alone.

And in other fun activities today, I made some peg people. Gabriel Prosser for Black History, and then a few guys for the Snackadium: Matt Stafford, Joe Burrow, and in honor of the Superbowl Halftime show, Snoop Dogg! And, I also put some pennants together. I had a busy day.

Fun Fact: Asa just sent my mom a text mid-day of a picture of me out in the yard mallet-ing some pvc pipe into the ground. I do weird things.
Next Up: Tomorrow we're doing Skeleton!
