2022 Winter Olympics, Day 8: Biathlon

Today our country was Belgium, and our event was the Biathlon.

Both Calib and Peyton got Belgium correct for the Spotlight country, but Hayden went just a little too far northeast and thought we were talking about Denmark. Everyone gave him a hard time about it. Somehow he gets the really tough ones, and misses on the more obvious ones.

Germany is totally dominating all those "sliding events", all the Luges, and now Skeleton too. They won gold and silver, so Calib got paid out. China came in third, so Peyton also won his bet.

Our event today was the Biathlon. A cross country skiing/shooting combo. So it was time to get the skis back out.  I set up a course in the backyard, with 5 targets (toy guys) and a (nerf) gun. The nerf gun was pre-loaded with 8 darts for Calib and Hayden (who had both earned an advantage), and 7 for Peyton who did not have an advantage.

The other part of the event is cross country skiing, so I basically took what we did the first day, and added in some new rules. The first time around the track you could head straight to the targets and take your shots. But, if you didn't knock all five targets down, you had to circle back around and stop at various continents to name flags and earn more darts. You could earn up to three darts per station, six per time around, and you decided how many you wanted to go for. If you missed the targets again, you could go around one more time and and collect more darts to try and get the targets one more time.

If you didn't knock them down on the third try, you were penalized 10 seconds per missed target, and could head to the finish line. The time stopped when you crossed the line. (The same start and finish lines we've had in previous events applied.)

Hayden was up first. He was sporting his shirt again too.

He didn't get them all on the first time around, so he went through the course naming flags to earn more darts.

He got them all on his second time around, and headed toward the finish line to lock in a time of 2:22.49

Calib was up next. He was sporting his Olympic shirt today too!

Calib struggled with this one. To be fair he had just gotten home from work, where he'd been since 7:30 and downed a whole Chipotle bowl, and was about to take a test for school. So, like, not an ideal time to be doing an event. But, he swore it was cool.

He knocked over one guy on his first trip around. (And spoiler alert, that's all he would knock down).

He ended up going around two more times, before we told him he could accept a penalty and head to the finish line. He said this one was just not his event. He came in with a time of 5:59.89.

Peyton was up last. We told him just to take his time, because there was certainly room to get the silver medal.  Peyton had good accuracy, and knocked down three on his first trip around.

But, he only got one more down on his second trip around, and had to take a third trip before he took down Captain Hook and headed to the finish line. He clocked in at 4:22.48

Your 2022 Biathlon medal winners..

And we also had a beer with it, obviously.

As always, dinner was a crowd pleaser (and the beer was not). We're off country dinners for a couple of nights now, thanks to some other special events. But, we'll be back with it next week.

A look at the leader board after Day 8...

That's it for Day 8!
